Friday I knew we would be going up camping as soon as I was done with work so I did a morning run.  I NEVER do morning runs.  I am soo not a morning person.  I guess I can handle getting up at 6:30am once a year or so though.
I usually don’t run on Sundays but I made an exception this week. We were camping Friday night and didn’t sleep the best so I figured I’d swap rest days.  I felt really great on the 11 miler.  I ran from our apartment to my parents house plus some.  It was fun running from one point to another rather then an out and back which is what I usually do.  I stopped at mile 7.5 at a grocery store to use the bathroom and get some water and ate a Powerbar Gel Strawberry Banana.

I liked this brand just as much as GU or Hammer Gel. I didn't really feel like I needed it but I want to get myself use to using it for the race.
I got like 10 Powerbar Gels for .39 cents each at GNC.  I'm pretty sure they are on sale cause the sell by date is at the end of June.  It was a steal, cause normally the energy gels are like 2 bucks!
I finished in 1:43, I was expecting to run about a 1:50.  I just ran what felt comfertable and glanced minimally at the Garmin.

Camping was way fun. It was a really last minute decision. Thursday night Thomas and I were talking about what we were going to do this weekend. We really wanted to go wakeboarding but the weather has been gloomy and rainy. So we decided to call up Camp Z and see if they had any cabins available. All the cabins were booked but they had just put up canvas platform tents. The platforms are made of wood and raised about 6 inches from the ground so it wouldn’t be a problem if the ground got wet.

We really like Camp Z. It is a church run camp so it is super cheap cause they aren’t trying to make a profit. Thirty dollars a night for a cabin, fifteen dollars a night for a tent. Plus they supply the wood for your campfire, it’s free to use the canoes, and you don’t have to worry about drunk loud neighbors because there is no alcohol aloud. And it’s only about an hour’s drive.

So we invited some of our friends who came last time camping and our friends Kasey and John were able to come. You know what I love about camping? Besides the camping gear, you really don’t have to pack much. You don’t have to bring a ton of different changes of clothes, no makeup, no hair straightener, and no blow dryer.
John and Kasey being assaulted by the smokey fire.

Thomas and I got there a little before them (about 5pm) so we started getting a fire ready. I really don’t have any experience in starting fires. You’d think starting a fire would be easy. I mean you hear about random forest fires starting all the time. But it took us at least an hour to get one going. We didn’t bring any newspaper up so we were using yellow sticky notes from my purse to try to get the flame burning a little more. Those didn’t work too well so we went up and asks the camp caretakers for some newspaper. (I just added that to the “camping list” that I have saved on the computer for future trips). We did get it going before John and Kasey got there around 6:45.

For dinner Thomas had made some delicious foil dinners and roasted hot dogs. For the foil dinners Thomas cut up carrots, potatoes, and chicken tenders and added about a tablespoon of butter and some Creole seasoning wrapped it all on foil and stuck it over the fire. They were so yummy! I guess the key is to cut all the ingredients up into small pieces so it cooks quickly. We are going to have them again this week but just stick them in the stove.

My Hubby is so special!

I ate so many sweets this weekend! Another reason I didn’t want to run Saturday. And a reason I really NEED to run on Sunday. We had licorice, peanut butter M&M’s, Bottle Caps, Mike and Ike’s, and b-day cake. Kasey’s b-day is on Sunday so we celebrated a bit early.

Birthday Girl Kasey!

Friday night we hung out around the fire eating and talking and then when it got really dark headed into the tent to play games. We played one round of Apples to Apples and then we were all tired and we conked out. I wore my sweats of my jeans to bed, plus a sweatshirt, coat and gloves. In the middle of the night I got hot and ended up taking of the sweats and coat and gloves. Also needed a middle of the night potty trip. Those are fun. Stumbling through the woods half asleep, tripping over tent stakes.

In the morning we had bagels with cream cheese and some breakfast burritos. Sat around the fire some more, played a little “Would you rather?” (I know we are supposed to be adults but hey… what else do you do in the middle of the woods). Then we played some rounds of the card game “Idiot”. Just a fun relaxing time.
Keeping warm inside the tent by playing some games.
That's really John's weiner I'm roasting.  I just needed a prop.

We got home 2:30pm. Showered and conked out for a couple hours. I don’t know why camping is so exhausting!

Went out to dinner at my fave Mexican restaurant El Porton and then rented a Redbox. Okay we NEVER get good movies from Redbox; they always end up being super cheesy. But we finally found a winner. State of Play with Ben Affleck, Russell Crowe, and Rachel McAdams. It was a really great show about this congressman and an investigation into the murder of his mistress. I would recommend it.

Getting to Know You Sunday

1. Do you have a fetish? I had to look this word up, wasn't too sure what it meant.  According to dictionary.com "any object, idea, etc., eliciting unquestioning reverence, respect, or devotion: to make a fetish of high grades." I would say running is a fetish of mine.

2. Do you sing in the shower? If I am trying to get my mind off something or if I want to put myself in a good mood.

3. Who was your first crush? Celebrity crush was "JTT" or maybe Devon Sawa.  Remember those guys? Where are they now I wonder. I remember my sisters and cousin and I getting a tape and pretending we were on a talk show that JTT and Devon Sawa came on.  And I totally and pics ripped out of magazines taped on my bedroom walls.
4. What do you think is the best manly trait a guy could have? Being athletic. I want a guy to be stronger and faster than I am.

5. Do you sleep naked? Nope

6. What do you do when (you think) no one is looking? Scratch my bum.

7. What's the first thing you do when you go online? Sign into my email and check blogs.

8. Summer is.....? BBQ's, warm weather, boating, being tan.

To play along go to MannLand

Sickness

Friday night I went to take Thomas dinner at work.  Parmesan and Basil Pasta and Lemon Pepper Tilapia.  While we were in the break room a co-worker asks him what I had made and he says "Some spaghetti stuff and fish."  Haha doesn't that sound appetizing?  I told him later he made it sound gross and apparently he went back and corrected himself.  What a good guy.
Anyways... so while I'm there, I start feeling a little queasy.  I got home and was in the bathroom every ten minutes for a couple hours.  I'll spare you the details.
Went to bed around 11pm and was up going to the bathroom every couple hours.  Luckily I was able to sleep in.  But I was totally bummed that I was feeling so bad cause I had a ten miler planned.
Thomas went and got me medicine, Powerade, and Diet Coke and Mentos (that combo supposedly settles your stomach).  So around 3pm I was feeling better and convinced Thomas to go run with me.  We went out to my parents house and did a 10 mile loop.
Thomas made it 8 miles! The longest he has ever run.  And he says that is his limit.  We were both hurting afterwards.
Here is a play by play of the run:
Mile 1- Had a sideache considered turning around and getting myself out of it before it was too late. My water bottle fanny pack was bouncing around so Thomas like the gentleman he is carried it for me.
Mile 2-3 Still dealin with the sideache.  Apparently I didn't learn my lesson from the Wenatchee half marathon where I drank coke before hand.  I needed a reminder that carbonated beverages give me major sideaches.
Mile 5-7 Finally the sideache went away and I was feeling fresh. Ate three Powerbar Gel Blast energy chews at mile 5 and had some water. They are yummy! Made my mouth a little dry afterwards though. You can go to Powerbar's website and sign up to get a free sample pack if you want to try them out.  They taste like those shark gummies.

Mile 7-7.5 was uphill. I made almost made it to the top and then wimped out and walked for about 50 meters.
Mile7.5-10 Did a few laps around the highschool track to make it to 9.5 and then ran the last half mile back to the rent's house.
10miles in 1:39:45 so pretty much right on the 10:00 per mile pace.
I am training at a 10:00 mile pace cause I've read that your long runs should be a minute slower than race pace.  It worries me a bit cause I'm afraid then I'll be used to running that pace.  But I have found that my tempo runs are feeling really good at race pace.
Have felt like crap ever since the run. Although I'm very glad I went out and got er done. Don't feel like eating but know it's important in order to recover faster and so that I don't feel like crap.  What do you do to recover after runs? And how long do you wait to eat?

Saturday:

10 mile long run

Wednesday workout was supposed to be 4 miles at half marathon goal race pace (9:00) and then a half mile recovery jog and then 1 mile at 10K pace (which for me is about 8:30). But 2 miles into the run it started absolutely POURING rain! It was like Noah and the Ark flood style rain! I was completely drenched and I could hear the squishing of my shoes over the music on my iPod. I ran back and made it four miles and decided I should probably stop. I was kind of bummed because I was feeling great. Something about the rain just makes you run a little faster. I guess because you are trying to run away from or out of it. So instead of the extra mile and a half I did Jillian's Yoga.

I have also decided to add 12 minutes a day to my workout routine. Since I am running 5 days a week with this half marathon training program, I was missing my Jillian. So I started waking up ten minutes earlier in the morning to do two 6 minute circuits of her videos. That way I get through at least one full Jillian workout per week. What inspired this change was a story one of the ladies at church told. She was telling about this American gymnast (I can't remember his name). Right before training camp this gymnasts coach took him aside and told him "There is only one thing I want you to focus on when you are at camp. I don't want you to worry so much about your routine or anything else. The only thing I want you to focus on is training harder than any other athlete at camp." The gymnast agreed to do so. After everybody else would leave from practice he would stay after and keep working. That Olympics he ended up winning a gold medal and he attributed it to his coach's advice. So how much longer do you think he would stay after to train??? I was thinking like a couple hours or so. Nope, he only stayed 15 minutes extra, but it made all the difference.

So that's why I have decided to add an extra 12 minutes in the morning. I know I'm not going to turn into an Olympic athlete but it helps. I feel more awake after working out. But it's totally manageable waking up only 10 minutes earlier. I'm totally not a morning exerciser; I think sleep is just as important for me as exercising. But like a say 10 less minutes of sleep is nothing and I feel better after doing it.

Ocho miles

Writing the word ocho just reminded me of the football player on Dancing with the Stars who changed his name to Ochocinco, so weird.  It makes me laugh.  Is he even hispanic?

According to Wikipedia:
"Ochocinco has been selected to the Pro Bowl six times and named an All-Pro three times. He legally changed his surname from Johnson to Ochocinco prior to the 2008 regular season to reflect the two numbers on his Bengals uniform.[2]. While he references his last name as two words "Ocho Cinco", his legal last name is condensed into one word, as spelled on his name change application.[1]"

Okay the real reason for this blog is to report on the eight mile long run this Saturday.  I finally broke out the water bottle fanny pack cause it was in the low 80's.  I felt like I had at least 5lbs of gear on me. Ipod, Garmin, water bottle, and GU.

Me all geared up.

I tried out some new things this run.  First, I have never had GU before.  I read some reviews on it and on Hammer Gel and decided to try them both.  I had some vanilla flavored GU about 15 mintues before the run and then Tropical flavored Hammer Gel about 45 minutes into the run.  I was pleasantly surprised with both flavors.  I am really wierd about tastes and textures and was afraid I was going to have to gag them down but they tasted great.
I had eaten a banana and a cup of cheerios without milk at about 9am and we didn't end up running till around noon so I was really glad I had the gels.
I am saying "we" because guess who ran 7 miles with me?! Thomas!!! I was so happy! I thought he would just run like 3 with me but he went to 3.25 and then I ran ahead to mile 4 while he walked a bit and then I turned around and caught up with him and we ran back together.  I didn't even have to use my Ipod cause I had my honey to chat with!
It was really fun looking at all the land and houses (we ran out by my parents house which is kind of out in the country).  When we buy a house we want it to be out in the country a bit with some land so we can build on it.
Another first for me was running with sunglasses.  I always thought they would annoy me but I didn't notice them at all. And it helped so my eyes didn't hurt from squinting.
Another first was not going goal race pace on the long run.  Last half marathon training I would try to go nine minute miles but I have been reading online and all the sources say that you should run your long runs about 1 minute slower than your desired race pace.  Running slower made me not so anxious about the run and made it more enjoyable for me.
This was a great run for training for hills too because there were lots of hills both ways.  The last quarter mile was up hill and we had a minute left to make it on goal pace.  We sprinted to the top of the hill and had five seconds to spare.
8 miles in 1:19:55
Funniest thing happened at the beginning of the run.  We started on a downhill and we were seriously 20 feet away from the house and a car goes past us so Thomas gets behind me and then I hear "Ah!! I rolled my ankle!" I turn around and he is limping and says "And right in front of that stupid van!" We both were laughing.  He walked it off and we continued on.  I busted out laughing a couple times on the run thinking of it again. And then we were at church and I thought about it again and had to try to hold it in.  Thomas leaned over to ask me what was so funny and I would try to tell him but then start laughing again. How come everything is so much more funny when you are at church?
Very successful run.  I'm converted to energy gels now and wearing sunglasses while running.
Oh ya the only bad things about the run was my shorts were to baggy and I chafed and I got a blister on one of my toes.  But it was worth it.

First week half marathon training

After the half in May I took a week "off" by just running a couple days and doing Jillian.  Then I did a couple weeks of training for the 10K that was last weekend.  And this week it was time to start half training again.  I'm liking this new program that I found on runners world.  When I ran my first marathon I did the beginners plan and this one is the intermediate plan.  For the Wenatchee half I did the Ryan Hall half marathon plan.  This one has me running 5 days a week instead of four.
Here was this weeks workouts:
Monday: 2x [1200 (600 recovery jog), 800 (400 recovery jog), 400 (200 recovery jog)]
Tuesday: 2 miles easy with Thomas, Jillian No More Trouble Zones
Wednesday: 3 miles with hills ( I read in a running magazine that on hills you should shorten your stride and slow your pace down on hills.  While that may work for some it doesn't for me.  It just seems like it makes the pain last longer and discourages me and makes me want to walk.  And rather just keep my pace up and get the hill over with.)
Thursday: Off
Friday: 5x Yasso 800's, Pilates for Flexibility (It's totally helping so that my hip and knee don't hurt now when I run).
Saturday: 8 mile long run

Summer's Hair!

I got my hair cut short and more blonde put in it.  Thomas was nervous for me to do it.  I got it cut on Wednesday night and Thomas was working the night shift so he didn't get off till midnight.  He just got right into bed and didn't want to wake me up.  But when I got out of bed around 1:30am to go to the bathroom he hurried and turned on the bedside light to take a look at the new "do".  He was happily surprised and liked my "sassy" new cut.

Zillah 10K

I haven’t posted the results yet cause our “darn internets” (as Thomas would say in his grandpa voice) haven’t been working so well. So here are the results from this weekends 10K.. 52:40 and second in the 19-29 year old female age group (we weren’t a very big group I guess ). I’m very happy with how it went. Here is how it all played out:

Thomas and I met my parents at the Costco parking lot at 7am to carpool to Zillah.

My cute padres walking their first race together.
Arrived at around 7:30am and got our race numbers and t-shirts. Thomas’ remark about the shirts was that a girl must have designed them since they are light blue and bright pink. I agree, they aren’t very manly. After registering we sat in the car for a few minutes because it was pretty cold outside, I’d say in the 40’s. Then of course I had to run to the bathroom for my pre-race ritual. Probably TMI but on race day I have to go on average about five times. As my wise running buddy Haley would say “your body just knows that it’s race day.” And I guess it’s trying to help me out by getting everything out before the race rather than during. Anyways… Thomas and I then jogged a bit to warm up and waited for the race to start.

Staying warm before the race.
I was a little nervous that it was going to start way late like the one in February that we did, because there were so many day of race registers. But we started just a few minutes late.

Mom, Dad, and Thomas all did the 5K and although we all started at the same time we went separate ways once the gun went off. I told myself from the very beginning to go out SLOW! I was really holding myself back but I looked down at Garmin and he tells me I’m still going 8:30 pace. I was wanting to go out around 9:00 pace. But I couldn’t hold myself back anymore than that. At about mile 2.5 I saw my padres and got a little encouragement from them. There were a few people in front of me that I was keeping my eyes on so when the time came I could start reeling them in. Mile three was when I decided to kick it up a notch and start going after people. The first person was a guy in his late 20’s who was going at a really steady pace. Reeled him in. Then there was another guy in his mid to late 20’s, reeled him in. And then at about mile five I caught this twelve year old boy. He was a good one to stick with. I could tell he didn’t want to get passed but after about a half mile he drifted back. From about mile 3.5 there was a girl in her 20’s who would come up to my side for a minute and then drift behind me for awhile. Then finally at mile five she came right up next to me and we both picked the pace up for the last mile. When we turned the corner and there was .2 miles left I really put it in to high gear. But with 200 meters left I thought I was going to puke and pass out. So for a second I slowed down. But then my race friend turned to me and was like “Come on!” So I dug a little deeper and sprinted till my legs were numb to the finish. I finished right in front of her, I feel kind of bad cause if it wasn’t for her I would have been probably like 10 seconds behind.

Getting our little strips torn off.  The girl in the black shirt and red shorts is my new friend.

Telling my friend thank you

This is what’s so great about running. In no other sport would your competition be encouraging you and pushing you to do your best. But in running, especially distance, there are people all around you encouraging you and cheering you on. I love it! And as I was leaning over trying to catch my breath, my race friend comes over with a cup of water for me!! How sweet is that?! I totally want to find out who she is and get in touch with her so we can hopefully run together again.

So here is the play by play of the 10K:

Mile 1: 8:29

Mile 2: 8:44

Mile 3: 9:16 (The most hilly part of the run. But didn’t bother me like most hills do).

Mile 4: 8:33

Mile 5: 8:21

Mile 6: 8:03

I’m really happy about how I ran. I ran how I had planned to, controlled at the beginning and then letting it all out at the end. Now that the 10K is over I’ve started half marathon training again. Woo hoo! Can’t wait till June. I’m excited about this program I’m training with. It’s another from Runners World plan.

Getting to Know You Saturday Edition

1. What has been your most memorable Mother's Day? (with your mom, as a mom, or with your wife)
Honestly I have a horrible memory and can't really remember a single one so I'll have to say this one.  We are poor college students so we are washing/detailing our moms cars for them for a present.
2. Have you ever been pulled over for speeding and were you able to talk your way out of it?

Yes when I was like a junior in high school I was coming home around one in the morning from babysitting and was about to get on the freeway on ramp and got pulled over.  I just said that I wasn't from there (it was in Selah and I'm from Yakima like 10 minutes away) and the officer didn't give me a ticket.
3. What's the oldest thing you have hanging in your closet?

I just barely threw away a basketball t-shirt from my 6th grade team the purple peppers.
4. Do you whiten your teeth?

With Crest Whitestrips
5. Underwear or Panties..What do you call your "unmentionables"?

Underwear
6. If you could go on vacation right now..today..where would you go?

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I've been there once before with my fam and it was beautiful.  Not too touristy, cobblestone streets, little markets all around, and the ocean was like warm bath water.
7. Do you get offended when people cuss on their blogs?

I don't enjoy it.
8. If you had to give up one luxury item, it would be....?

Like I said, we are poor college students so I'm pretty sure we don't have any luxury items.

Races In All Different Place

I found a fun new blog to stalk.  It's this girl who just recently got married, runs, and is a lawyer.  Her wedding pics are BEAUTIFUL! And I loved looking back at when she was training for a marathon and reading her thoughts and experiences about that.  So it motivated me to look back at the races I've run and how I've come along in running.
Belive it or not my first real distance race was a full marathon.  That was back in August of 2005 when I was 19 years old.  I got first place in my age division cause I was the only one in it! Haha! Very encouraging though.

(Wasn't the course beautiful!? Waterfalls, forest, bike trails, potato fields.  What more could you want on a run?)
After that I didn't really run too much.  Got busy with my sophomore year of college and went off to Ecuador.  When I came back from Ecuador fat it motivated me to start running again.  So I found a friend and we trained for the Rex Lee Run 10K in Provo, UT in March 2007.  Then in July we ran the Teton Dam Half Marathon together.

I went on the mission and ate tons of Mexican food and got fat again and so when I got back I was motivated to run again.  In June of 2009 I ran the Seattle Rock and Roll Marathon, did that one solo.

My Hubby (at the time fiancee) and Sister Ashley were there to cheer me on.

Then found my running bud Haley and started doing a bunch of fun little races; The Frosty Four miler in February of 2010, Shamrock Cup 6K in March, and the Wenatchee Half Marathon in April.  I felt a little bit depressed once the Wenatchee Half was over cause I was looking forward to it so much and working so hard towards it.  So I just had to sign up for another one so I had something else to look forward to.  I'm running the Pacific Crest Half Marathon at the end of June.  This weekend is the Zillah Fun Run 10K.
My goal for the 10K is to purposefully reign myself in at the start so that I can have a fast finish.  I've been doing this on my long runs and it's felt really good.  Could totally be mental.  But whatever works right?
So here are my running stats.  (More for my info than anything)

Date Name Event Overall Time Split

August 2005 Mesa Falls Marathon Marathon 4:34:00 (10:27)

March 2007 Rex Lee Run 10K 55:06 (8:52)

June 2009 Seattle Rock and Roll Marathon Half Marathon 2:03:40 (9:26)

February 2010 Frosty Four Miler Four Miles 33:54 (8:29)

Diamonds are a girls best friend

One of our students, Mya who is three years old, today while at circle time took my hand and was examining my wedding ring.  She looked up at me and said "Teacher, can I wear that!"
I think we girls are just born with a love of diamonds and that pretty much proves my theory.
(And as nice as I try to be, no, I did not let her wear it.  Images of it being dropped in the toilet or lost in the bark on the playground flashed through my mind and I couldn't part with it.)

Getting to Know You Sunday

1. Are you superstitious? Maybe when it comes to running.  I have to do things on race day just the same way I normally do them.  But otherwise, no.

2. If you were an animal..what kind would you be? I don't really like animals.  But I do like horses cause they are fun to ride and useful.  So I'd be a horse.

3. You would never catch me wearing.........? Remember those robe like things I think they were called "dusters"  I saw someone wearing one the other day.  I'd never wear one of those.

4. If someone posts a VLOG..do you watch it? Yes.

5. Have you ever waxed your girlie/manly parts..or any other part of your body? Yes, I've done the brazilian a couple times.  Let me tell you it HURTS! I think I'll stick with the bikini for now on.  I took one of my older sisters with me one time and she came out and said "You for sure need a couple drinks before doing that!" I get my eyebrows waxed every month or so.

6. Are you a spender or a saver? Spender for sure! If I have the money I immediately think of a million ways to spend it.  Luckily Thomas is a saver so it balances me out.

7. If you were starring in a movie..who would you want to play your leading man/woman? Sandra Bullock, she rocks at any role i.e., The Blind Side, Miss Congeniality, The Proposal, and she is beautiful.

8. Smoker..never smoked..social smoker..or smoked back in the day? Never smoked and never will.

Lazy Saturday

I love having NO plans! It's so wonderful to not have any thing that you are obligated to do on the weekend.  We got to sleep in! Yes! Okay we were actually signed up to go do a service project but we didn't know where or when and nobody called till that morning like an hour before and we were still asleep. Oops! We ended up going on a run.  I did 7 miles in prep for the 10K next weekend.  Thomas ran the first 2 miles with me and then went and hiked up the canyon a bit while I ran another mile and a half.  I turned around and he met up with me when I had about a mile and a half left.  It was a really nice run.  Perfect weather 64 degrees or so with a slight breeze.  Time was 1:03:30.  After our run we stopped by Subway for lunch and I chugged like a gallon of blue powerade.  Showered and then took like an hour and a half nap.  After nap time we headed over to Thomas' parents house to veg in front of the t.v.  This is the life! Although I wouldn't want to be lazy everyday, it's nice to be lazy once in awhile.  Oh and I have a confession to make, I like watching trashy t.v.  The Hills, The Girls Next Door, The Real Housewives, it's bad... but very entertaining.
